Long-term records are being smashed across parts of Australia as an intense wave of heat continues to push across the nation.
A delayed monsoon has been contributing to well above average temperatures for large parts of the country, with many parts on track to experience their hottest January on record as yet another heatwave hits the country.
Records have been smashed over the last few days across several states.
On Tuesday, temperatures soared close to 50 degrees over parts of South Australia, with Tarcoola (49.0c) and Port Augusta (48.9c) both recording their highest temperatures on record.
On Wednesday, Albury/Wodonga registered its hottest January day on record, climbing to 45.3 degrees, just 0.1 degrees shy of its all time record. Also on the same day, Broken Hill fell just short of its all time January record by 0.5c (but a new record at the airport site), reaching 46.3 degrees.
On Thursday, Wagga Wagga reached 45.2 degrees after a minimum of 29.8 degrees, both new records at the site (75 years of records). Meanwhile Canberra has averaged 41 degrees the last three days, its hottest three day spell on record (with 42 degrees expected today).
And today, two locations (Noona and Borrona Downs) in western New South Wales have broken Australia's all time minimum record, dropping to just 35.9 degrees and 35.6 degrees respectively.
Scorching temperatures in the mid 40s will affect significant parts of NSW again today, however the hottest airmass will retreat to the interior over the weekend.
Unfortunately, this only looks like being a brief repreive as another wave of heat spreads towards the coast early-to-mid next week, with Australia a good chance of seeing its hottest January on record.
