Record breaking November heat to grip southwest Western Australia

Written by Early Warning Network | Nov 21, 2023 1:58:19 AM

Southwestern parts of WA are experiencing a wave of heat that is expected to grip the region until early to mid next week, with November heat records set to tumble.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a Heatwave Warning for Western Australia though to Thursday 23 November, with the warm temperatures caused by a quasi-stationary low pressure trough lying just off the west coast, directing hot offshore winds across the region and keeping sea breezes at bay.

Perth will see a run of consecutive days with temperatures in the high 30s, which will last into next week. Some models indicate the city could exceed 35 degrees on up to five or six consecutive days. The most intense heat is expected between Wednesday and Saturday, with Wednesday's windy weather adding a dangerous element. Much of the region is already in an extreme fire dangers rating, with catastrophic fire danger possible as the week progresses.

Further south will not escape the heat either, with Bunbury exceeding 30 degrees on at least seven consecutive days, and Margaret River on at least six days.

This sort of heat is not uncommon across the South West Land Division during summer, with the area known for its hot and dry summers. However, this sort of heat this early in the hot season has not been experienced since records began in 1897. With the area already trending a couple of degrees above average so far for November, many areas are likely to see their hottest November on record.

The Dangers of Prolonged Heat Exposure

Prolonged exposure to extreme heat can lead to serious health issues, including heat exhaustion, heat stroke, dehydration, and even more severe medical conditions. The impacts are felt across populations, putting significant strain on healthcare systems as the number of patients with heat-related conditions increases. It can also reduce productivity, especially in outdoor and non-air-conditioned work environments, and reduce labour output and potential disruptions in supply chains.
