Climate Risk Extreme Weather Map: 20th October 2021

QLD: Severe to locally extreme heatwave conditions will be present across some far northern parts of Australia.

In the stronger pink shaded zone along central and some northern parts of the QLD coast as well as the adjacent inland, some of the scattering of storms are likely to become severe with damaging to locally destructive winds, large to giant hail and bursts of heavy rainfall. In the fainter pink zone along the southern coast of QLD, the adjacent inland and northeast NSW, a smaller number of places may experience a severe storm. Brief damaging winds and large hail is possible for the places which experience a severe storm. In the adjacent red shaded zone in the southeast interior of QLD and near the NSW coast, reasonably low severity is likely from more localised storms. However, some small hail is possible.

Localised clusters of storms are possible during the day and evening in parts of northern Australia, extending down through parts of the central and southern interior. A few of the storms about the Gulf Country in QLD may become severe with damaging winds.

An area of strong winds with gusts of 70 to 90km/hr is likely to move across central parts of SA in the afternoon and evening. A few places may experience brief gusts exceeding 90km/hr. These winds carry some localised damage potential.
